In this five-lesson course, you will learn step-by-step hand-building techniques to create unique ceramic objects without the use of a potter's wheel. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced clay expert, this course will give you the skills and inspiration to get started with clay. Course outline Lesson 1: Introduction and Pinch Technique Get to know the basics of clay types and tools. In this lesson, we will learn the pinch technique, which creates a hollow shape by slowly squeezing the clay. Ideal for making small bowls and cups. Lesson 2: Roll or Coil Technique We will explore the coil technique, which involves stacking rolls of clay and smoothing them into a solid shape. We will make a vase or pot and discuss various decorating techniques for texture and pattern. Lesson 3: Slab Technique Learn how to use thin, rolled-out sheets of clay to create geometric and angular shapes. We will make a box or a small bowl and delve into connecting and strengthening the plates. Lesson 4: Combination Techniques and Creative Freedom Bring the techniques together! Use the pinch, coil and slab techniques in one design, such as a sculptural object or a more complex vase. This lesson offers space for personal creative ideas. Lesson 5: Finishing and Preparing for Firing We will finish the pieces by smoothing the surfaces and adding details. You will also learn about drying, firing and glazing, so that your work is ready to be fired in the ceramic kiln.
